Orientation Workshop on Commercial Diplomacy and Trade Promotion
The Ministry of Commerce thorough a transparent competitive process selected 41 officers for posting as trade officers in Pakistani missions abroad. The officers have varying backgrounds and experience so pre-departure orientation cum training was organized by Pakistan Institute of Trade & Development. The training module comprised lectures on trade promotion, trade defence measures, dispute settlement, marketing tools like international exhibitions and delegations and on administrative/ financial matters. The training was inaugurated on 8th February 2016 by Mr. Mohammad Arbab Shahzad, Secretary Ministry of Commerce who welcomed the officers and emphasized the importance of their assignments and the expectations that the government have towards them.
Since, different wings in Pakistani missions abroad need to cooperate and coordinate to create synergies for national benefit, a talk was arranged wherein Foreign Secretary and Commerce Secretary jointly addressed the course participants and briefed them on intra-mission coordination.
The class room part of the training ended on 16th February when Federal Minister for Commerce, Engineer Khurram Dastgir Khan addressed the participants. The Minister congratulated all the selected officers and emphasized that "the officers must shun the fixated mentality of bureaucracy and serve their country like the servants of the people. All officers are the trade ambassadors of Pakistan and they should endeavor their level best to portray the true image of Pakistan through their actions, behaviors and attitudes". In the last, the Minister expressed his great expectations from all the officers and told that all officers are going to define the future economy of Pakistan in days to come and urged them to work with all their heart and soul to achieve the mission of Ministry of Commerce. Cerrificates of participation were awarded to the successful officers.
The classroom training was followed by visits to trade bodies, Trade Promotion Organizations and the exporting firm at Islamabad, Lahore, Sialkot and Karachi.
Seminar on 'Capitalising the Benefits of GSP Plus'
A joint seminar on "Capitalising the Benefits of GSP Plus" was organized by the Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) and Pakistan Institute of Trade & Development (PITAD) here at RCCI on Thursday (23 October 2014). President RCCI Mr. Asad Mashadi, Director General PITAD Ms. Anjum Assad Amin, Chief Executive Word Trade Advisory Dr Shakoor, Senior Vice President Mr. Mian Humayun Pervez, Vice President Mr. Saboor Malik and large number of businessmen attended the seminar.
Addressing the inaugural session President RCCI Mr. Asad Mashadi said that Rawalpindi Chamber always take initiatives for the betterment of business community and keep the businessmen informed about what is happening in the world. He said that basic purpose of today's seminar is to create awareness about GSP Plus and its requirements among traders and industrialists to get maximum results.
Speaking on the occasion DG PITAD Ms. Anjum Assad Amin has said that RCCI always cooperate with the government in any steps taken for the benefits of the businessmen community. She said that today's seminar main focus to unveil the conditions which are yet unknown for businessmen.
Later, Chief Executive World Trade Advisory Dr Shakoor while briefing the participants said that GSP Plus status given to those developing countries that had below 2 per cent trade with EU. He said that Pakistan is only focusing textile sector but there is a list of items which can be export to EU trade markets under some subsidies. He further said that it is completion for Pakistanis to meet the international standards while exporting their goods to EU.
7th Programme Steering Committee (PSC) meeting of TRTA Programme
The Programme Steering Committee (PSC) meeting of TRTA Programme was held at Serena Hotel Islamabad on 15th October 2014. Meeting was co-chaired by Mr. Muhammad Shahzad Arbab Secretary Commerce and Mr. Bernard Francois, head of Cooperation EU Delegation to Pakistan. Ms. Anjum Assad Amin, Director General Pakistan Institute of Trade and Development (PITAD) was the Secretary of the meeting. DG, PITAD is the focal point for TRTA and PITAD is responsible for monitoring of the programme in addition to being the secretary of the PSC meeting. After opening remarks from co-chairs and Secretary PSC meeting a progress report on implementation of the project was presented by the representatives of International Trade Centre(ITC for Component I) United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO for Component II) and World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO for Component III) respectively followed by discussion. All the representatives from the beneficiary organisations attended the meeting.
Mr. Muhammad Hasan Shafqaat, Deputy Director PITAD presented the programme monitoring report of three components of TRTA-II prepared by PITAD. It was highlighted during the meeting that the performance of the implementation agencies and overall direction of the programme was satisfactory.
DG, PITAD concluded the meeting with a vote of thanks and by sharing that performance of implementing agencies and overall progress of programme is satisfactory.
